Apparently, the University of Georgia Foundation, UGA's former fundraising organization (until Tuesday when they were effectively fired by Georgia's board of regents), filed paperwork last year that claimed the rights to everything University of Georgia including "education services, namely providing instruction at the college level,". The board of regents is claiming that "University of Georgia" is their intellectual property but the trademark actually belongs to this foundation. Could they become the "school with no name" as Maller light-heartedly suggests in the opening of the article?

Personally, I like this idea. I appreciate any nods to Sergio Leone and/or Clint Eastwood and the idea of an anitheroic sports mascot (an avenging bulldog with a troubled past, perhaps?) makes my day. I wonder what the intellectual property law experts would have to say about this dispute? Whatever they say, I'm sure it won't be nearly as sensational as I would want it to be. Alas, my gun toting, whiskey drinking, woman-hating school mascot is likely still a long time off.

http://www.benmaller.com/archives/2004/may/28-u_of_georgia_to_lose_name.html
